The Matterhorn Bobsleds opened in 1959 at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. The first ever “tubular steel roller-coaster” in the world, it paved the way for basically every non-wooden coaster that has ever, and will ever be built.
Aside from being a ground breaking coaster, the structure itself is pretty awesome too! Walt was inspired to build the Matterhorn after seeing the actual mountain on a vacation in Switzerland. According to Wikipedia, “Walt grabbed a postcard of the mountain from a souvenir stand and sent it back to Imagineer (architect) Vic Greene with the message, “Vic. Build This. Walt.” The rest, as they say, is history.
The Matterhorn is still an impressive coaster more than 50 years after it’s opening, made even more entertaining by updates to the ride vehicles, and the early 2015 update of the Abominable Snowman with a newer, and scarier Audio-Animatronic.
Despite the headaches that always come after a bumpy ride on this classic coaster, The Matterhorn is always on my ‘must-ride” list on any trip to Walt’s park.
Fun Fact: The Disney Imagineers affectionately named the original Abominable Snowman, which sat in the attraction from 1978 to 2015…”Harold.” The name remains to this day.
Thanks to Disney Avenue for this awesome graphic showing the structure of the mountain! A basketball game in the Matterhorn? BUCKET LIST! *pun intended*
